Chapter 10

The Tar Pit

Alivia, still crouching next to Sharon in the front room of their house says, “Wow, Sharon.” She looks as deeply as she can into Sharon’s eyes with the lights still off. “How much of that actually happened?”

Sharon stares off into space, hardly blinking. “Too much of it,” she says. “I know it’s a bit ridiculous of me to withhold all of that shit, especially with all of the preaching I’ve been doing about being upfront, but there are some things in my life that I would rather forget. There are some things about my life that I had forgotten. Well, until tonight.”

“Are you okay?” Alivia asks, burying her vindication.

“Not right now, but I will be,” Sharon says, finally looking Alivia in the eyes. “The reason that I hate violence so much, the reason I want to become a lawyer, is because I lived so much of that shit when I was younger. My dad was a…” Sharon looks away again. “My dad was a bad drunk.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died when I was about seventeen. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“Did you…?”

“Did I kill him?” Sharon says, looking back sharply at Alivia.

Alivia doesn’t move or speak.

“No,” Sharon says. “Sorry to disappoint you, but my dad died from alcohol poisoning. One night he had twelve too many shots, and poof. He passed out and never woke up again.” A disturbing smile crosses Sharon’s face. “That was the best day of my young life.”

“Out of curiosity,” Alivia says. “If you’re so against violence, why are you becoming a defense attorney?”

“When I begin to act as a lawyer,” Sharon says with a chuckle, “I’m going to work in family court. I want to be the one who protects kids from the childhood I had.”

“Haven’t you already taken the Bar Exam?”

“Ninety-sixth percentile,” Sharon says with a modicum of pride. “I want to be a judge. Lawyers twist shit so much all of the time. The truth never comes out truthful in court, even if the verdict lands on the right side of things. The whole reason that I’m a paralegal is to get the inside info. You know, tricks, gambits, that sort of thing. The more I can spot that shit, the less likely I am to be conned.”

Alivia keeps talking, trying to get Sharon past the still raw nightmare. “I think that’s a worthy goal,” she says.

“It’s been so long since I’ve thought about my father, since I’ve thought about what he did to me.”

Mission failed.

“It started when I was nine or ten. I don’t really remember, I’ve tried to block it out for so long,” Sharon says, emotionless. “He would come home drunk, or slip into my room after my mom had gone to bed. At first, it wasn’t so bad. I mean,” she holds up her hands, “it was all bad, don’t get me wrong. What I mean is that at first, I didn’t know what was happening. He would come into my room and tell me to get undressed, telling me that he needed to check for mosquito bites.
